There is something about a face to face encounter that make it difficult to demonize one’s opponent, and I think that’s a good thing. I am very aware that when one is colliding with some odious person online, purely through the vehicle of text, it’s possible to be arguing with someone who only exists in your imagination. Needless to say, I’ve been on the receiving end of this kind of thing, and it’s incredibly annoying. When you are just behind the keyboard you don’t get any of the social cues that would allow you to empathize with your opponent, or, at a minimum, go half way towards understanding his position. So you can wind up manufacturing an enemy and attacking him for views that he doesn’t actually hold. And what you say in that context, or write, will not be constrained by what he would have said in real time to correct your distortion of his views. This is why so much debate online is just totally unproductive.

An optimist stays up to welcome the new year. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old one leaves.

I’m not really sure I’m ready to do either this year. Really not looking forward to this year ending and having accomplished nothing.

So I’m on NG++ (that is, third time through) in Dark Souls 2, and I get to just before the Demon of Song. I remember there was a Milfenito in the little house, and if you talk to her she just disappears. So I think, ok, this time I won’t talk to her and see what happens.

I walk into the house, but it’s different. The first two times through it was just a Milfenito, sitting with her dress spread out just like the first one you see. Talk to her, she disappears. But, at least I think, in NG++ the Milfenito is sitting in the fetal position and is all beaten up. Like, brused and bloody. I can’t talk to her, but a post-it note on the floor said to try shield breaking. I did, she stood up briefly and I got the talk command. I talked, and she disappeared like always.

Am I misremembering the first play throughes? Was she busted up the first two times and I just don’t remember, or is it actually different? I can’t remember. I feel like I’m missing something, especially some lore. Can someone fill me in?
